Clinical School renews sponsorship agreement

Leading pharmaceuticals company Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) have recently entered into a new educational sponsorship agreement to give a further £1.5m to the University to support the training of future neuroscientists at Cambridge.

The University of Cambridge’s Department of Chemistry and the Institute of Astronomy are exploring the ancient and ultrasmall at this year’s Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition. The exhibition, being held until tomorrow (3 July), provides hands-on, approachable, interactive exhibits that have many applications in the real world.

Sculpture at Jesus

Jesus College opened its eighth biennial exhibition of contemporary sculpture this week. This year the exhibition features works by Rachel Whiteread, Eilis O'Connell, Alison Wilding, Philip King, Keir Smith, Steven Gregory, Peter Hide and Steve Dilworth.

New Pro-Vice-Chancellor appointed

Professor Tony Minson has been appointed a Pro-Vice-Chancellor for three years from 1 August 2003. A Fellow of Wolfson College, Professor Minson is Chairman of the Council of the School of Biological Sciences, a position he has held since 2001.

Building a brighter future for cancer research

Work has started on a new state-of-the-art cancer research centre in Cambridge, re-enforcing it as a world leader in the field. The new centre is a collaboration between the University of Cambridge, Cancer Research UK and Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust.

A five-day walk across the Peruvian Andes might not seem the ideal holiday for someone with arthritic knees and a severe cartilage injury but that does not seem to bother Debi Cleary, a technician at the Department of Zoology. Perhaps it is the fact that her mountain ordeal will raise funds for the leading UK mental-health charity Mind that is helping Debi to pass the pain barrier.

Engineering the body

Engineering students in their second year at CUED were offered a new course in 'Biological and medical engineering' this term. The response has been enthusiastic, with over 100 students signing up. One of the first practical sessions was offered by Dr Roger Carpenter, an expert in oculmotor control based in the Physiology Laboratory.
