Professor Tony Minson has been appointed a Pro-Vice-Chancellor for three years from 1 August 2003. A Fellow of Wolfson College, Professor Minson is Chairman of the Council of the School of Biological Sciences, a position he has held since 2001.

As Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Minson has been given special responsibility for issues surrounding Planning and Resources. His predecessor, Professor Malcolm Grant will be leaving Cambridge to take up the position of Provost of University College London (UCL), returning to an institution which he served from 1986 to 1991 as Professor of Law and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Laws.

Professor Minson has held a number of positions within the University. He has been a member of the General Board and associated committees since 2001, Head of the Virology Division and he was appointed Professor of Virology in 1991.

Professor Minson was born in Ilford, Essex and gained his first degree in Birmingham in 1965. He was a postgraduate student at the Australian National University; researching the field of fungal genetics. He joined the University of Cambridge as a Senior Research Associate in 1976. He is a member of the Governing body of the Institute of Animal Health and a member of the Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine.

The appointment was made by the Council on the nomination of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Alec Broers, with input from the Vice-Chancellor elect, Professor Alison Richard. Professor Minson is the first of a proposed five new Pro-Vice-Chancellors who will work with Professor Richard when she takes up her post in October.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Minson said:
