A five-day walk across the Peruvian Andes might not seem the ideal holiday for someone with arthritic knees and a severe cartilage injury but that does not seem to bother Debi Cleary, a technician at the Department of Zoology. Perhaps it is the fact that her mountain ordeal will raise funds for the leading UK mental-health charity Mind that is helping Debi to pass the pain barrier.

Debi’s heroism has history; she recently completed a 17-mile walk in aid of MacMillan Nurses which she says was itself a major ordeal:
