Dr Jochen Guck from the University’s Department of Physics has been awarded the Paterson Medal and Prize for distinguished early career research in applied physics by the Institute of Physics.

He has received the award for his invention of the optical stretcher, together with other novel physical probes to elucidate the cellular, mechanical and optical properties, their role in biological function and their potential in medical diagnostics.
