10 June 2003Yesterday (Wednesday 11 June) marked the start of the May Bumps, a traditional four day rowing competition between the college boat clubs of the University of Cambridge.

06 June 2003A five-day walk across the Peruvian Andes might not seem the ideal holiday for someone with arthritic knees and a severe cartilage injury but that does not seem to bother Debi Cleary, a technician at the Department of Zoology. Perhaps it is the fact that her mountain ordeal will raise funds for the leading UK mental-health charity Mind that is helping Debi to pass the pain barrier.
Engineering the body
05 June 2003Engineering students in their second year at CUED were offered a new course in 'Biological and medical engineering' this term. The response has been enthusiastic, with over 100 students signing up. One of the first practical sessions was offered by Dr Roger Carpenter, an expert in oculmotor control based in the Physiology Laboratory.
New grant for diabetes research
04 June 2003Diabetes research at Cambridge has received a boost with £140,000 of funding over the next three years from Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The grant will support a study into hypoglycaemia awareness in people with diabetes.
Semiconductor research grant
02 June 2003Research into developing the most important semiconductor since silicon is going to benefit from a £1.2 million new grant awarded by the ESPRC to the University's Centre for Gallium Nitride. The grant will fund a three-year research collaboration to build Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based products with Thomas Swan Scientific Equipment and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST).
New Royal Society Fellows
30 May 2003The following University staff have recently been made Fellows of the Royal Society: John Barrow, Professor of Mathematical Sciences; William Bonfield, Professor of Medical Materials; Anthony Dickinson, Professor of Comparative Psychology, Ann Dowling, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Stephen O'Rahilly, Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Medicine.
The big flood - risks and remedies
23 May 2003Fifty years ago, on the night of 31 January to 1 February 1953, a storm surge in the southern North Sea resulted in catastrophic flooding on the coasts of England and the Netherlands, claiming over 2,000 lives. Today (23 May 2003) a Cambridge-organised international conference will review the flood risks which we now face and how we can best deal with them.
CMI host stem cell conference
16 May 2003Researchers aiming to overcome the acute shortage of bone marrow by finding ways of ‘growing’ it in artificial conditions will be discussing their work at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research next week.
Founding father leaves bequest
16 May 2003Last night (15 May 2003) Professor Andrew von Hirsch delivered the first annual Nigel Walker Lecture with a discussion of the criminalisation of ‘anti-social’ behaviour. The Lecture is funded by a bequest from the late Sir Leon Radzinowicz. The bequest will significantly enhance the work of the Institute of Criminology, funding a student prize and visiting fellowship as well as the lecture series.
Gene linked to diabetes risk
