A student from Sidney Sussex College was admitted to Addenbrooke's Hospital on Wednesday (17th November 1999) where he was being treated for the symptoms of meningococcal septicaemia.
By far the biggest event to take place in the Cambridge Musical Calendar is happening this Saturday, 20 November in Ely Cathedral. An orchestra of combined musicians of Cambridge University Musical Society First Orchestra and Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra, an excellent line-up of professional soloists, will be joining forces with a combination of University, College and Local Choirs to stage the spectacular Mahler's Eighth Symphony of a Thousand.
As the Millennium approaches, critic and curator Bryan Robertson makes his selection of artwork for two rather different exhibitions, opening this week in Cambridge. Kettle's Yard will be showing the critic's personal view of contemporary British painting and sculpture, '45-'99. In a related exhibition, the Fitzwilliam Museum will be displaying Robertson's choice of French paintings, enamels and manuscripts from its own permanent collection.

Cambridge economic historian Sheilagh Ogilvie has been awarded the prestigious Gyorgy Ranki Prize for her book, State Corporatism and Proto-Industry: The Württemberg Black Forest, 1580-1797. She is co-winner of the prize, which is awarded by the Economic History Association for the best book on European Economic History published in 1997 or 1998.
