There will be a dramatic gala celebration of Chinese culture to mark the start of the Chinese Year of the Rabbit this Sunday 23 January at Cambridge Corn Exchange.

Chinese New Year is the most significant traditional Chinese festival and an important holiday in East Asia. To celebrate it, every year Chinese Students and Scholars Association in Cambridge organises the Cambridge Chinese New Year Gala, with more than 2000 people coming to last year’s event.

A great variety of spectacular performances will include martial arts, circus acts, a Chinese orchestra, choral singing, Chinese folk dancing, comedy sketches and much more. There will be two identical shows, at 2.30pm and 7.00pm.

Guests of honour for the evening performance will include Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Mr Stuart Laing, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian White, the Mayor of Cambridge City, Councillor Sheila Stuart, the Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, Councillor Linda Oliver, and Chinese Embassy officials.

The annual Gala is an important cultural exchange event between China and the UK, supported by the Education Ministry of China and the Chinese Embassy in the UK.

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association in Cambridge is an official non-profit and non-political organisation. With more than 2,000 registered members, mostly from China, the main mission of the organisation is to serve the needs of members, and provide opportunities and benefits for them by facilitating the exchange of information between China and students studying abroad.

Tickets for both shows will be on sale in the City Centre, outside Next on Sidney Street, between 1 and 3pm, priced £6 each or £5 each for a group of three or more. Any unsold tickets will be available on the door.
