Dr Rebecca Lingwood, of the University of Oxford, has been appointed as the new Director of the University of Cambridge's Institute of Continuing Education.

Dr Lingwood, who gained her Engineering degree, MA and PhD at Cambridge, will return to the University to succeed Professor Dick Taylor on October 1, 2009.

She is currently Director of Continuing Professional Development at the University of Oxford's Department for Continuing Education, a role she has held since 2005.

She said: "I am delighted to be returning to Cambridge and to have the opportunity to build on the Institute's traditions, creating a strong and vibrant future for Continuing Education."

"There is now a widespread recognition of the need for high-quality part-time programmes and the Institute is in the enviable position to be able to provide an evolving range of programmes to satisfy varied requirements throughout life for professional development and personal intellectual enrichment.“

“I am looking forward to working with the wider University to expand the current range of programmes in line with the University's mission and to extend the reach of the University's research and scholarship to diverse groups nationally and internationally."

The Institute of Continuing Education, based at Madingley Hall, offers a large and flexible programme of part-time learning opportunities for adults.
Currently, it has approximately 11,000 students per year, running a full range of programmes for the general public, courses for professional and vocational development, as well as running the University’s International Summer Schools.

As a well-founded academic department of the University of Cambridge, the Institute plays a major part in the University’s commitment to widening its accessibility, community engagement and lifelong learning – as well as ensuring that the University's unparalleled academic strengths and resources are made available to as many interested learners as possible.

The Institute works with a wide variety of partner bodies and has large numbers of international, as well as national and regional, learners and is keen to extend both its international residential programmes and its e-learning supported work.

As well as Dr Lingwood’s work in continuing education, she also maintains her research interests in fluid dynamics. Her work in this field has seen her make academic visits to MIT in the United States, as well as spending a research period with the Laboratoire d’Hydrodynamique, École Polytechnique, Paris.

She currently has a Guest Professorship (Hydrodynamic Stability) at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden.
