The Government’s environmental credentials will be put to the test on Monday at a debate to be held at the Cambridge Union Society.

The 2009 Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry Debate is “This House believes that Government is more for Eco-Bling than saving the planet”.

Proposing the motion will be Professor David Mackay from the University of Cambridge who is a Natural Philosopher and author of the recently –published book ‘Of Sustainable Energy Without the Hot Air’.

Seconding him will be the former Executive Director of Friends of the Earth Tony Juniper.

Opposing the motion will be a senior representative from the Office for Climate Change at the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Julian Wright, Policy Officer for the Environment Agency’s National Climate Change team.

The Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry was founded in 1980 as an informal local society whose members work in or otherwise have an interest in the construction industry.

It promotes an understanding of those topics in the industry, which cover a wider field than those normally dealt with by the local branches of the various learned and professional societies. This it does by arranging a programme of meetings, seminars and visits.

Meetings of the Forum generally draw an audience of 50 to 100 and the breadth of membership attracts speakers of the highest quality. A feature of the Forum meetings is the concluding open forum discussion between the panel of speakers and the audience.

The Forum is financially self-supporting and it has no commercial aims or political affiliations. Its members include building owners, building contractors, sub-contractors, architects, surveyors, engineers, lawyers, accountants and trades union representatives.

The CFCI debate, to be chaired by RIBA President Sunand Prasand, starts at 6pm on Monday 30 March. All are welcome.
