This year's Varsity Trust Scholarship has been awarded to Miss Mary Bowers of Queens' College Cambridge.

The Scholarship is awarded annually to help fund a student through Journalism School after completing their degree at Cambridge.

It is given to the student who best shows their passion for journalism while financial need for the scholarship is also considered.

Miss Charly Lester of St Catharine's has also been awarded a bursary.

Mary Bowers read History at Queens' College. She has worked on Varsity throughout her time at Cambridge, initially as Music Editor, progressing to Arts Editor and finally Editor of the independent student-run newspaper which is published weekly during term-time.

She will be reading an MSc in Journalism at Columbia University in New York where she is second in line for the Fulbright Alistair Cooke Award there.

Charly Lester read Chinese and Law at St Catharine's College. A keen sportswoman, she has represented the University at both skiing and cricket, and is current President of The Ospreys, the club for women sporting Blues. She is going on to read for an MA in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Westminster.

The Varsity Trust is a unique venture created by a deed in 1992 with the prime objective of furthering the education of students in journalism by the provision of funds in the form of scholarships, bursaries or grants to students at the University.
