A public exhibition on new proposals for floodlighting at the University Sports Ground at Wilberforce Road starts today.

Planning permission was granted in 2002 for a competition-standard full floodlighting scheme for the athletics track at the Sports Ground.

While the University may still decide to implement that scheme, it wishes to discuss with user groups and local residents about a possible revised scheme for the entire site, to cover the existing and proposed hockey pitches as well.

The new scheme proposes a significant reduction in the level of lighting proposed for the athletics track.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to view the existing and proposed schemes, with plans and diagrams showing how the comparative light levels might affect neighbouring properties.

The Sports Ground, which was built by the University in 1994, is used by a large number of community groups including Cambridge and Coleridge Athletics Club, Cambridge Ladies Hockey Club and numerous schools. It is estimated that more than 1,000 individuals use the Ground each week during the Summer, but in the winter months the lack of lighting prevents this.

The exhibition of the new proposals will be open on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 March from 4 till 8pm, and on Saturday 11 March from 10am to 4pm, at the Pavilion at the University Sports Ground. There will be a questionnaire for feedback. Plans are also available on-line from the link above right.
