The University Youth Training Programme is one of the best in the country and that's official!

In an independent report by the Training Standards Council, the University has been awarded three out of a possible five top grades.

It says that the Programme offers excellent training opportunities in work placements and that its key strengths include good employment and promotion prospects for trainees, good awareness of equal opportunities issues among trainees, effective placing of trainees in non-stereotypical roles, a well-designed induction, effective progress-review system, clear management strategy focused on training, comprehensive appraisal and staff development programme, and the trainees' views were frequently sought.

The YTP is partly funded by the government, through CambsTEC. The Training Standards Council is responsible for the independent inspection of government-funded work-based training and assesses each organisation every four years.

The University's Youth Training Programme has been operating for 15 years and gives 16 to 25 year olds work experience in a variety of departments and the opportunity to work towards a National Vocational Qualification at level two or above. Places are offered in mechanical and electrical engineering, laboratory and technical fields, administration, accounting and amenity horticulture.

Trainees normally stay on the Programme for one or two years.
