A nationwide campaign began this week (29 Sept-4 Oct) to raise awareness of issues that face dyslexic people whilst studying and in the workplace.

Staff at the Disability Resource Centre at the University are amongst those supporting Dyslexia Awareness Week, organised by the British Dyslexia Association. This campaign aims to educate employers and staff through a variety of ways, including information packs and organised events.

Statistics suggest that four per cent of the population are severely dyslexic, with a further six per cent having mild to moderate difficulties. The Disability Resource Centre helps such individuals and employs a Dyslexia Support Co-ordinator to provide advice, information and support to students with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.

A drop-in facility exists where students and staff can come to the centre and pick up information on dyslexia. Other facilities available include organising individual study skill sessions; referral for screening and diagnostic assessment; guidance on applying for the Disabled Student's Allowance; and liaising with tutors and departmental staff regarding special arrangements for examinations.

Disability Awareness Week, which is planned for the end of October, will also cover issues relating to dyslexia.
