A collection of artworks profiling a wide variety of animals are on display in Michaelhouse Café on Trinity Street and form the new ‘Vetrospective’ exhibition.

 

Over 45 pieces, ranging from paintings to photographs, have been kindly donated by different artists to the Cambridge School of Veterinary Sciences.

The exhibition is open to members of the public from 8am-5pm on Monday through to Saturday until the Friday 31st July.

The works will be sold in a public auction that is due to take place on Friday 31st July at 7.15pm. All proceeds will go to The University of Cambridge Veterinary School Trust’s appeal for Cambridge Veterinary School’s Cancer Therapy Unit.

The exhibition includes pieces from well-respected artists who have exhibited works in many prominent galleries. Examples of some of the artists with works on display are:

CRAIGIE AITCHISON CBE RA
Born in Scotland in 1926, Craigie Aitchison studied law at Edinburgh University and the Middle Temple in London before changing career and taking up a place at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in the early ‘50s. In 1955 he was awarded a British Council Scholarship to study in Italy, where he was particularly influenced by early Italian painting.

Craigie Aitchison became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1978, and in 1988 he was elected as one of the 80 Members of the Royal Academy. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1999.

Several of his works are held in the collection of the Tate Gallery. Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery and the National Galleries of Scotland also own works.

SUSIE COOPER OBE
Susie Cooper (1902 –1995) was a prolific English ceramic designer working in the Stoke-on-Trent pottery industries from the 1920s to the 1980s.

Susie worked for many pottery firms, including Wedgwood. In 1940 she was awarded the Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts, and in 1979 she received an OBE.

Recumbent Deer, the donated piece, was one of the last designs she created for Wedgwood.

MAGGI HAMBLING OBE
Born in Suffolk in 1945, Maggi Hambling is a distinguished painter and sculptor whose work can be seen in the British Museum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Collection and many other public collections in the UK and abroad.

Maggi Hambling is a household name in British art and was the First Artist in Residence at the National Gallery in 1980-81. She is a figurative painter, sculptor and printmaker whose strong identification with her subjects.

In 1995 Maggi Hambling was awarded an OBE for her services to painting.

CHRIS ORR MBE RA
Chris Orr, Royal Academician and Professor Emeritus is a painter, draughtsman and printmaker. In 2008 he was awarded an MBE. He was Professor and Head of Department of the Printmaking Department at the Royal College of Art London 1998 – 2008 and his work has been exhibited worldwide.

His work is in the collection of Arts Council of Great Britain, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Science Museum and the Tate Gallery.

SIR KYFFIN WILLIAMS KBE RA
Sir Kyffin Williams (1918 – 2006) was born on Anglesey and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1941 to 1944, where he was appointed Senior Art Master at Highgate School in London, a position he held for almost thirty years. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1974 and has been President of the Royal Cambrian Academy on two occasions: 1969 – 76, and again from 1992. He received an OBE in 1982 and was knighted for service to the arts in 1999.

Considered by many to be one of the greatest figures in twentieth-century art in Wales, Kyffin Williams is best known for his dramatic paintings of the harsh North Wales landscape, its weather-beaten farmers and their dogs.
