Dr Andrew Balmford from the Department of Zoology was recently named by Scientific American magazine as one of the ‘Scientific American 50’, the magazine’s annual list recognising outstanding acts of leadership in technology over the past year.

Dr Balford was awarded as a Policy Leader in the Environment category for his work on the economic benefits of conserving nature. His work with colleagues was published in SCIENCE magazine. The team reviewed over 300 case studies and concluded that although unsustainable exploitation sometimes makes landowners richer, these gains are consistently outweighed by the economic losses, such as climate change and flood risk.

Dr Balmford also received commendation for his work in founding the Cambridge Conservation Forum. The Forum is a network aimed at bringing University and non-governmental organisations together to ensure research is realistic and underpinned by the best available science.
