Leading research and development in the area of medical imaging was the topic of Cambridge University’s latest Horizon event held at Churchill College last week.

Over 80 senior executives from global companies including Kodak, GSK and Canon Europe Ltd gathered to hear updates from industry leaders and the University’s academic experts on cutting-edge technologies and trends in the field.

The vision driving medical imaging at the University is to advance patient care and strengthen technology development, diffusion and adoption. Delegates benefited from presentations and discussion on the future needs for medical imaging, image generation capture, transmission, connectivity, analysis, visualisation and the role of emerging technologies. Specific topics covered during the day included novel biomedical imaging, imaging for neuroscience drug discovery and development, terahertz imaging and spectroscopy in medicine and the life sciences, freehand 3D ultrasound and high-resolution imaging of living cells.

Sir Peter Mansfield, Winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2003, addressed the delegates and emphasised the importance of the latest imaging technologies to the healthcare industry:
