The University of Cambridge Programme for Industry (CPI) has used its expertise in developing and running leadership programmes for sustainable development to provide a senior influencers seminar for Wales.

Supported by the First Minister and the Welsh Assembly Government, this seminar ran from November 8 to 11 and brought together thought leaders from across the public, not-for-profit and private sectors to present and discuss key ideas in sustainability.

The seminar aimed to create a new vision for how Wales can move towards sustainable prosperity and in so doing define a distinctive Welsh approach that can be an inspiration for other regions of the world. The seminar, held in Chepstow, had 38 delegates drawn from across Welsh society as well as three invited guests from other regional governments around the world and was bilingual. The seminar was based on the Prince of Wales’s Business & the Environment Programme which is widely recognised as the pre-eminent international forum for senior leaders to explore and debate the case for sustainable development, and to exchange ideas and best practice on sustainability.

Wales is one of very few countries with a duty of integrated sustainable development written into its constitution, and has a formal statutory framework in place underpinning the adoption of sustainable development. The seminar formed part of this ongoing commitment towards a sustainable Wales through Cynnal Cymru, the Sustainable Development Forum for Wales, and Public Service Management Wales and was developed in partnership with Cardiff University and the University of Wales, Bangor.
