A new theory suggests that the two sexes differ in the mind, in two fundamental ways: females, on average, tend to be slightly more focused on empathy, and males, on average, tend to be slightly more focused on systems. Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Director, Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge, will launch the ‘Spotlight on Science’ lecture series on Friday, March 12 2004 at the Babbage Lecture Theatre at the University of Cambridge with his talk on ‘The Essential Difference: men, women and the extreme male brain’.

Professor Baron-Cohen’s talk will explore this theory and why some individuals don't fit these trends, including how upbringing and biology both effect people’s minds. The discussion will also talk about autism, when the typical male profile becomes exaggerated, causing individuals to have degrees of difficulty empathising, but who can systemise normally or even to a talented level.
