On Tuesday 3 November the Department of Pathology will host an event ‘The Deadliest Disease’, screening a 45 minute documentary about sleeping sickness in the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge.
The event is in aid of the charity Campod (Cambridge Fund for the Prevention of Disease) and is part of National Pathology Week.
Sleeping sickness is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. The Democratic Republic of Congo suffers more cases than any other country.
Mark Field, Professor of Cell Biology and Parasitology at the University of Cambridge will introduce the documentary by discussing his research focus: trypanosomes, the parasites that cause sleeping sickness.
Without treatment, trypanosomes invade the victims brain and ravage their sleeping cycle, driving them mad before killing them. But dedicated doctors and medics are fighting back.
After the screening Professor Field will be joined by Dr Barry Kingston, to answer questions and discuss how work in the University Department of Pathology is contributing to the fight against Sleeping Sickness.
Campod is a charity based in the Department of Pathology that raises money to directly support research into diseases of major social significance. Amongst others, these include cancer, influenza, pre-elampsia, bilharzia, diabetes and arthritis.
National Pathology Week runs 2-8 November and is coordinated by The Royal College of Pathologists.
