For the third year running, Sidney Sussex College has emerged victorious in the annual Cambridge Culinary Competition.

The winners were announced last week at an Awards Ceremony held at Magdalene College. As the highest-scoring team in the competition, the team from Sidney were awarded the Steward’s Cup. Teams from a record 15 Cambridge Colleges and other University institutions took place in this year’s competition.

Participants competed in eight individual food classes at the competition, which was held at the Guildhall on 5 November. The participants were awarded marks by a team of professionals from the hospitality and catering industry, led by Peter Griffiths, MBE.

In addition to the culinary talents on show, Front of House staff created spectacular table settings themed on the University’s 800th Anniversary.

Sidney Sussex College were named winners in three classes (in the Under 21’s, Afternoon Tea Cakes and Petits Fours classes), Emmanuel College in two classes (Hot Main Course and Hot Vegetarian classes) and Madingley Hall in two classes (Canapés and Cold Starter classes). Other winners on the day were Queens’ College (Live Cookery Competition), St Catharine’s College (Cold Sweets) and Christ’s College (Front of House).

In addition, there were prizes for Piotr Porada of Murray Edwards College, who was named Best Newcomer, and for Nigel Tumber from Sidney Sussex College, who was named Best in Show.

Kelly Vickers, Manager of Conference Cambridge and one of the organisers of this year’s competition said: “We wanted the 2009 Culinary Competition to be extra special as it is Cambridge University’s 800th Anniversary - and so it has been! We had a record number of entries, the standards were higher than ever before and everyone involved has been impressed by the creativity and skill of all those taking part. Congratulations to all the winners - and to everyone who too part for their time and commitment in making this the special competition we wanted it to be. We are also grateful to our generous sponsors for their support”.

Kevin Keohane, Catering Manager at Christ’s College added: “This competition provides a perfect showcase for College Chefs to demonstrate the fine dining on offer here in Cambridge. We are particularly pleased that our new Under 21s category has attracted a great deal of interest and intend to include this class in future competitions”.
