When Professor Alison Richard is inaugurated as the University of Cambridge’s 344th Vice-Chancellor on October 1, she will become the second woman to take on the role of principal academic and administrative officer of the University.

For the first time in history, she will be joined in the formal proceedings by a woman Esquire Bedell. Nicola Rogers will lead the ceremonial procession, carrying the traditional mace and wearing the robes of academic dress.

As the 104th Esquire Bedell, Ms Rogers takes up an office that dates back nearly 700 years at Cambridge. As well as assisting with the inauguration ceremony, Nicola will join colleague John Emmines at events ranging from University sermons to receiving graduands. They have responsibilities for the conduct of Congregations, and they also supervise the correct formulation and wearing of academical dress.

John said:

"It's an exciting time to introduce the University's first lady Bedell, as we're about to welcome Professor Alison Richard as our new V-C."

Nicola is also keen to use her full-time occupation as web editor for the University Offices to add a new dimension to the role:

"I would like to use the web site to explain more about the jobs that the ceremonial team do."

"The events that we take part in give our students and staff opportunities to meet and to celebrate their achievements, and that is as important now as it was back in the 13th century."
