A team of eight University of Cambridge members of staff will take part in a 200km 24 hour run.

The athletic volunteers from the Department of Physical Education will be pounding out the kilometres in a relay on a treadmill at the Fenners PE Centre, Gresham Road, Cambridge, to raise money for the Community Sport Volunteer Coaching Scheme.

The scheme helps to address the local shortage of volunteer coaches for amateur sport by recruiting and training University staff and students to work in and around Cambridge. Volunteers work with a range of organisations providing activities for children, the elderly, people with disabilities, young offenders and refugees. The scheme also supplies volunteers to help with local school, sports club and city Council-run programmes.

Demand for sports volunteers locally is very high. Funds are needed to provide essential coaching, child protection and disability awareness training for the growing number of university volunteers taking part in the scheme.

Scheme Coordinator Caroline Ward said: “Community Sport provides a vital link between the University and the local community. This fundraising event will be tough but it symbolises the commitment of our volunteers to helping make the Scheme work.”

The run starts at midday on Thursday 20 April, finishing 24 hours later. Support is welcome. To sponsor the team e-mail community.liaison@sport.cam.ac.uk or visit the website via the link above right.
