Several past and present members of the University were recognised in the New Years Honours list.

Professor Lynn Faith Gladden of the Department of Chemical Engineering received an OBE for services to chemistry. Her research focuses on adsorption and transport phenomena in porous media, with particular focus on magnetic resonance techniques and catalysis.

Geoffrey Whittington, PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor of Financial Accounting and Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, received a CBE for services to the Accounting Standards Board (ASB). Professor Whittington has been part of the ASB since it was established in 1990. The ASB is an independent body with responsibility for setting industry standards in the production of financial accounts. Professor Whittington's current research interests include the role of accounting regulated utilities and the regulation of accounting and auditing.

Dr John Sulston , who retired as director of the Sanger Centre last October, was awarded a knighthood for his work on the Human Genome Project.

Dr Lynne Jones, received an OBE for services to child psychology and mental health in war-affected areas of Europe. Dr Jones is a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Family Research. For the last 15 years she has worked with peace and human rights non-governmental organisations, particularly in eastern Europe and central America, most recently she has been working with a charity called Child Advocacy International, helping to establish a child psychiatry service in Kosovo.

Professor Nicholas Day, MRC Research Professor in Epidemiology and honorary co-director of the Strangeways Research Laboratory, received a CBE for services to statistics and epidemiology.

Cambridge students past and present were honoured for their sporting achievements - Olympic gold medallists Stephanie Cook, a Cambridge medicine graduate, and Kieran West, a trainee teacher at Christ's College, both received MBEs.

Also honoured was Richard MacCormac CBE, senior partner at MacCormac Jamieson Prichard, who received a Knights Batchelor for services to architecture. Richard MacCormac is one of the masterplanners for the University's West Cambridge site. He has taught and lectured widely and published articles on urban design and architectural theory. He was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects between 1991 and 1993 and is a member of the Government Urban Task Force.
