A photo competition was held at the Department of Engineering in February, inviting images that relate to research or teaching in the Department. The entries could be beautiful, fascinating, intriguing, amusing or all of these.

The winning image was taken by Ghim Wei Ho, a PhD student working for Professor Mark Welland, at the Nanoscience Centre.

She took an image of a three-dimensional nanostructure with a scanning electron microscope, with the colour modified using the colour balance function in Adobe Photoshop.

Ghim Wei’s PhD project at the Nanoscience Centre involves the fabrication and characterisation of novel nanostructures. The nano-flowers image she submitted for the competition is an example of a number of different morphologies that have been produced using chemical vapour deposition.
