Clare Short, Independent MP for Birmingham, Ladywood and former Minister will be in Cambridge on Wednesday to give a speech at the Murray Edwards Politics Society.

She’ll talk about the ongoing Palestinian/Israel conflict and warn that the window of opportunity for creating a two-state solution is fast evaporating – increasing the risk of decades of bitter division and conflict.

The event’s been organised by the newly-formed Murray Edwards Politics Society which was set up at the start of this academic year by Nadia Islam, a 2nd year Political Science student.

“I’ve always been fascinated by politics. I’d seen that Clare Short had given a speech on this subject to Parliament and thought her views were really interesting.”

Clare Short was Secretary of State for International Development in the UK Labour government from May 1997 until her high-profile resignation in May 2003 due to her opposition to the Iraq War.

With a degree in Political Science from the University of Leeds, Clare Short worked as a civil servant before being elected to Parliament as Labour MP for Birmingham, Ladywood in 1983.

Viewed by many as one of the UK’s most colourful politicians, she’s indicated she intends to stand down from Parliament at the next General Election.

Wednesday’s speech should prove both informative and entertaining.
