Local charities were awarded £40,000 in a prizegiving ceremony held at the University of Cambridge on Wednesday 12 November.

Teenage Cancer Trust, the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and Press Relief each received £13,450 as beneficiaries of the Bridge the Gap Charity walk which takes place every year in September.

The walk, a 4 and a half mile route through ten of the Colleges, takes in some of Cambridge’s most spectacular architecture.

This year saw a great turnout of walkers participating in the Sunday morning stroll with a difference, raising a record amount of money for charity.

Luke Shackleton (pictured), age 12 from Great Shelford was the top child fundraiser, bringing in £220. Luke was presented with a BMX bike by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alison Richard at the ceremony.

Christine Newman was the top adult fundraiser, winning tickets to Beauty and the Beast Christmas Show at the Corn Exchange, and Swaffham Bulbeck Primary School claimed a £100 book voucher donated by Cambridge University Press. Four talented artists, winners of the drawing competition, each took home a voucher to design and print their own T-Shirt at Talking T’s.

Penny Wilson, Head of Community Affairs at the University said: “Bridge the Gap is a fantastic community initiative which enables local residents to explore the Colleges. We are very pleased with how much money has been raised for three very deserving local causes”.

The next Bridge the Gap Charity Walk will take place on Sunday 13th September 2009. For more information please contact Press Relief on 01223 434378.
