A new exhibition at King’s College features the paintings of Bing Jones, a portrait painter and a doctor, starts on Saturday 21 February. Among the paintings on show will be a portrait of the recently retired Vice-Master of St Edmund’s College, Dr Geoffrey Cook.
This exhibition is of recent work, including formal commissioned oil and tempera portraits. It also includes more intimate paintings and drawings in chalk, graphite and ink.
Describing his approach to work, Bing Jones said: “There’s something special about a well-painted traditional portrait. I work from life rather than from photographs. I aim to find something essential from my sitter’s face and catch it in colour. Traditional methods and painterly craft are the best way to achieve this. The exhibition includes examples of large formal portraits for institutions and more relaxed and intimate pieces.”
His list of commissions is extensive, ranging from Cambridge academics to northern industrialists, Presidents of Medical Royal Colleges to a World Champion Boxer. As a doctor, Bing treats bone marrow transplants for half the week and paints portraits for the other half.
The exhibition runs from Saturday 21 February to Friday 6 March and is located at the King’s College Art Centre, which can be found on ‘A’ Staircase in the left hand corner of the Front Court. It is open daily from 11am to 5pm. The artist will be at the gallery to meet visitors all day at the opening on Saturday 21 February.
