"This is believed to be the first time that an academic lawyer has been appointed directly from an English Law Faculty on to the High Court Bench. This not only reflects Jack Beatson's outstanding reputation, but also shows an admirable willingness on the part of the Lord Chancellor to strengthen the intellectual calibre of the Bench by drawing on the talents of the academic legal profession."

Commenting on Professor Beatson's appointment, the Lord Chancellor said:

"Jack Beatson is an outstanding academic lawyer who has also given a wealth of public service as a Law Commissioner, Recorder and deputy High Court Judge. He is well known to the wider legal community through his many writings. His appointment will highlight the qualities that academic lawyers with appropriate experience can bring to the High Court Bench."
