There are just a few days left to apply for a place on this year’s free Sutton Trust Summer Schools at the University of Cambridge. The closing date for applications is next Friday, 2 April 2004.

The academic courses are a great chance for students in Year 12 (or equivalent) at maintained* schools or colleges in the UK to live the life of a first-year undergraduate for a week by attending lectures, seminars and practical sessions in their subject.

Best of all, the schools are free of charge to students - the Sutton Trust pays for their food and accommodation, as well as their travel to and from Cambridge, the course costs and all organised extra-curricular trips and activities.

Courses in the biological sciences, English, history and physics run from 5-9 July 2004, with those in engineering, law and mathematics taking place from 12-16 July 2004.

The summer schools are taught by leading academics and are open to all students in Year 12 (or equivalent) at state schools and colleges in the UK.

Priority for places is given to students who:

  • Will be the first in their family to attend university;
  • Have parents in non-professional occupations;
  • Attend schools or colleges with very little history of sending students to Cambridge in the last two years;
  • Attend schools or colleges with a low overall A-level points score;
  • Are plausible applicants for university (the standard requirement is 5 A/A*s at GCSE);
  • Attend schools with a high proportion of students receiving free school meals;
  • Attend schools with a low proportion of students going on to higher education;
  • Are taking relevant subjects for the course to be studied.

The first Sutton Trust Summer School was held at the University of Oxford in 1997. In 1998, summer schools at Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Nottingham were attended by 330 students from the maintained sector; a third of them went on to gain places at the university where they had attended the summer school.

Application forms must be submitted through the student’s school or college.
