The New Europe Society will be showing the series of short films entitled ‘The Decalogue’. This is a series of films Director Stanley Kubrik described as the only masterpiece he could name in his lifetime. The films will be shown this Tuesday, November 18.

The Decalogue is a series of ten short film based around the Ten Commandments. Each one of the films takes the commandment and shows a possible meaning. Each of the ten films is based around a Warsaw Housing Estate.

The series was originally made for Polish television as a mini series but has reached international audiences through showings at a number of film festivals around the world, including Venice, Italy and San Paulo, Brazil.

The series also won a number of awards for its director Krzysztof Kieslowski, including Best European Film in 1991, Best Foreign Language film in 1997 and Outstanding Achievement in Foreign Films in 2000.

Krzysztof Kieslowski began life as a documentary maker before moving on to writing and directing for television and then later films. He was not only recognised for his work on The Decalogue but also on his three colours series ‘Red’, ‘White’ and ‘Blue’, with the film ‘Red’ earning him an academy award nomination in 1995. He died in 1996 in Warsaw, Poland, leaving behind a legacy of though-provoking and critically acclaimed works.

The film showing is being organised by the New Europe Society who aim to put on events to bring together people of all cultures in Cambridge to build new bridges for understanding and collaboration.

This showing will be of the first two films out of the series, the first film starts at 6pm and the second at 8pm in the Buckingham House Lecture Theatre, Murray Edwards College, Huntingdon Road. The films will be presented by Matilda Mroz of the Department of Slavonic Studies, University of Cambridge.
