One of the world’s most respected international law academics, Professor Yasuaki Onuma, will give this year’s Ashby Lecture in Robinson College Auditorium on Wednesday 26 May at 6pm.

Professor Onuma is Professor of International Law at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Law and Politics and author of several books examining issues of human rights and global perspectives.

To celebrate his important visit, Clare Hall has organised a week of events celebrating Japanese culture. Japan Week features Japanese cinema, workshops on preparing sushi, origami and nanga painting, art exhibitions and concerts. In addition to the Ashby Lecture, His Excellency the Ambassador of Japan, Masaki Orita, will give a lecture on 27 May on Japan’s role in the international community. This lecture has been sponsored by Mizuho International, ANA, The Japanese Embassy, The Japan Foundation and JETRO London.

Professor Onuma’s lecture is titled ‘A Transcivilisational Perspective on Global Issues’. In it he will argue that the traditional Western ways of dealing with international affairs are inadequte due to their West-centric way of seeing, understanding and assessing situations. Tensions caused by this approach have led to harsh reactions from Afro-Asian nations, and even to terrorist attacks.
