Today a revised proposal for creating a framework for handling IPR was published in the Reporter.

A working group chaired by Professor Bill Cornish, Professor of Intellectual Property, has spent the last six months consulting the university and considering the best way forward for creating a regulatory framework for the conditions surrounding the exploitation of IPR.

The committee consulted Faculties, Departments, Colleges as well as other universities, and took submissions from over 40 individuals who were concerned with previous proposals debated last autumn.

The report will go to Discussion on 21 October, and it is hoped that a new policy will be finalised in the new year.

Professor Cornish, chair of the Committee, said:

"We have taken into consideration many different opinions here - and tried to weigh up the main needs of both the individual academic and university in formulating a proposal. The result, I hope, is that we have woven together a policy that is clear, logical and fair.

"We believe that the proposals protect an academic's freedom to publish their work and to have a strong say in whether and how it is commercialised.

"Equally importantly, the proposals aim to ensure that the university is accountable and transparent."
