A teach-yourself French course created by the University of Cambridge Language Centre and BBC Worldwide has won a Gold Award at Europe's leading ceremony for the industry.

'Get Into French' is an interactive, self-taught, beginners' course in French, which helps users develop language skills by engaging in typical situations in animated locations within a virtual town. The course pack includes a CD-Rom, an audio CD, a book and a website.

Judges in the Interactive Multimedia Publishing category of the International Visual Communications Association's 2005 awards said 'Get Into French' "makes exceptionally good use of graphics, is visually engaging and has excellent support material".

Academics from the University of Cambridge's Language Centre helped to devise the course content for both 'Get Into French' and its new sister programme, 'Get Into Spanish', which was launched in February 2005. The courses were created by BBC Worldwide and produced by Fifth Dimension.

Anny King, director of the University Language Centre, said: "We're absolutely thrilled that 'Get Into French' has won the Gold Award. Our goal in devising the content was to create an engaging, accessible and, above all, useful beginners' course in French. Learning a new language can be a lot of fun and we hope this award will encourage more people to give it a go."
