In 2009 GEEMA marked its 20th anniversary. The group was set up in 1989 as a joint venture by students and the Colleges of Cambridge to encourage ethnic minority applications and to ensure bright students, whatever their background, knew that Cambridge could, and should, be a place for them.
GEEMA was one of the first programmes of its kind in UK universities and its model has been the inspiration for many widening participation and widening access initiatives. It provides a range of outreach initiatives from Open Days and Summer Schools exclusively for UK students from black minority ethnic backgrounds, to school visits and partnerships with external organisations.
The competition is open to all schools, for students in years 9-11. The logo should include the letters ’G E E M A’ – but otherwise entrants have free rein to design something they think reflects the ethos and values of GEEMA. Either hand drawn or digital entries will be accepted and the closing date is 15 January 2010. The winning entry will receive a University of Cambridge hooded sweatshirt and a £50 book token.
GEEMA coordinator, Mark Copestake says:
“What we’re looking for in the logo is something that reflects what GEEMA is about – helping black and minority ethnic students achieve their potential. The logo might show how ethnic minorities have contributed to Cambridge over the years, or be more forward looking in its approach. The only limit is students’ imagination and we’re really looking forward to seeing what they produce”.
