Almost 200 sixth formers from state schools and colleges around the country took part in this year’s Cambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) shadowing scheme.

A record number of students applied for the scheme which was run over three Thursday-Saturday slots earlier this term. The number of undergraduates volunteering to host visiting students also rose significantly.

Students came from as far away as Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to shadow current Cambridge undergraduates who were teamed up with their visitors according to subject interest. The sixth formers attended lectures, supervisions and social events in the company of their undergraduate hosts.

Louis Hutson (pictured above), from Headlands School in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, is interested in studying economics. He shadowed Parin Shah, a second year natural sciences student at Jesus College.

“It was very interesting and gave me a lot of information about studying at Cambridge, and about universities in general. The best thing was being part of student life for two days – something you cannot really understand unless you experience it,” said Louis.

“I would definitely recommend anyone thinking of going to uni, or applying to Cambridge, to consider applying for the CUSU scheme.”

“It’s really pleasing to see just how enthusiastic current undergraduates are to volunteer to take part. They know how much difference it can make and I know our “shadows” really enjoyed the chance to meet current students and see for themselves what Cambridge is actually like,” said Joe Farish, CUSU Access Officer, a Cambridge graduate who went to a comprehensive in Cumbria.

“High points for many students included a debating workshop organised by the Cambridge Union Society and a welcome dinner provided by St John’s College and held in the Old Hall. Seeing Cambridge covered in snow was another bonus – and certainly helped to give us some great entries for our photo competition.”

Results of the CUSU shadowing scheme photo-diary competition will be announced shortly with the best images from the top four entries appearing on the website.
