The first career event tailored specifically for postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers in the School of Physical Sciences will take place at Robinson College on Wednesday 28 November between 1pm and 7pm.

Twelve current and former scientific researchers will share their career stories in order to inspire fellow researchers about the huge range of career options open to them.

One of the speakers will join the event via a live satellite link-up to the British Antarctic Survey in Rothera, Antarctica.

The speakers are physical scientists and come from all career backgrounds including university lecturing, environmental research, media relations and investment banking.

They will talk about their own career development and give the participants an insight into what their careers are really like, what motivated them to choose their career path and also what challenges they have overcome in getting to where they are today.

Participants will get career guidance through Question & Answer sessions, careers-themed workshops and a networking reception.

“University researchers face a number of specific career challenges, whether it's getting ahead in the highly competitive academic environment or trying to find out what other options might be open to them,” says Liz Willcocks, the Careers Adviser for Postdocs in Physical Sciences. “We hope that this event will provide them with support and motivation to progress to the next stage in their career.”

This is one of the main events of the new ‘School of Physical Sciences Postgrad and Postdoc Development Programme'.
