The University Health and Safety Office has received the silver award, a mark of excellence for Occupational Health and Safety from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for its work with the Cambridge Colleges during 2009.

The award was presented at a gala dinner in Birmingham by Ian Walker, RoSPA Trustee, to John Emmines, College Liaison Officer, and Dr Martin Vinnell, Director of Health and Safety.
Recipients are recognised for a high level of performance underpinned by good management systems which deliver consistent improvement and are working towards the level of excellence required for a Gold Award.

Dr Vinnell, said: 'It has been excellent to see the hard work of the Safety Office rewarded as a result of the extension of services we provide to the Colleges. Working with the Colleges has given our staff experience of the health and safety issues across the University and all have reported back to say how warmly they have been welcomed by College staff.

“Next year we hope to report on how these working partnerships have developed. We won't be satisfied until every College has contacted our College Liaison Officer to discuss their needs. With a bit of luck, we’ll then be on track to receive the Gold Award next year.”

The mission of the University Health and Safety Office is to contribute to University success through the promotion of a safe and healthy place to work, study, visit and enjoy. The role of the office is to assist all sectors of the University in taking control of their safety management, by delivery of professional services in support of their requirements.

A range of safety support services including training, inspection and auditing is now available to Colleges, providing consistent safety advice across the University.
