Clare College student Kelly Neaves has won a region-wide photography competition and a prestigious year-long paid contract worth up to £2500.

Kelly, a PhD student in pharmacology at the University, won the photojournalism category in the ‘Focus' i10 Student Photography Competition. Her winning entry comprised four images entitled ‘Health – Malaria in East Africa' which the judges called “technically astute and creative”.

For the next year, Kelly will be commissioned to take press-style shots for i10, an organisation which allows businesses to access experts and facilities from 11 universities in East Anglia including the University of Cambridge.

She was also presented with a state-of-the-art Kodak digital camera package donated by sponsor Kodak European Research at the awards ceremony.

John Piper of Kodak European Research, who sat on the panel of judges, said: “We were extremely impressed with Kelly's submission and broader portfolio which demonstrated great technical ability in lighting difficult subjects, and an appreciation for what makes a great press shot.”

“I'm sure the Focus competition and the contract with i10 will provide her with some great experience and get her career in photography off to a flying start.”

Launched in November last year, the ‘Focus' i10 Student Photography competition is open to students from universities and colleges across the East of England. 59 entries were received this year and from these 11 were interviewed and two winners selected.

The winning photographs Kelly submitted will be displayed alongside the other ten finalists' entries in an exhibition which will tour three of the region's universities including Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridgeshire, Norwich School of Art & Design in Norfolk and Writtle College in Essex.
