The University's Regent House has approved the award of honorary doctorates to seven eminent persons from the worlds of religion, law, physics, industry, medicine, theatre and music.

Those approved were:

The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr John Sentamu , the Archbishop of York (Doctor of Divinity).

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Retired Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court (Doctor of Law).

Professor David Gross, Director of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California Santa Barbara (Doctor of Science).

Sir Ralph Robins, formerly Chairman of Rolls-Royce plc (Doctor of Science).

Professor Herman Waldmann, Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology, University of Oxford (Doctor of Science).

Harold Pinter, playwright, actor and director (Doctor of Letters).

Professor Christopher Hogwood, Founder and Emeritus Director of the Academy of Ancient Music (Doctor of Music).

Honorary Degrees will be conferred at a special Congregation to be held in the Senate House on Monday 23 June.
