The Bishop of Ely will walk 17 miles from Ely to Cambridge this week to acknowledge the lasting relationship between the Diocese of Ely and the University, both of which celebrate significant anniversaries this year.

As well as being the 800th anniversary of the University of Cambridge, 2009 marks the 900th anniversary of the Diocese, which covers the county of Cambridgeshire and a portion of Norfolk. The seat of the Bishop, Dr Anthony Russell, is located at Ely Cathedral.

The Bishop and his fellow walkers will cover the distance on Sunday, September 27th. The route will follow the Fen Rivers Way along the east side of the Great Ouse and Cam Rivers from Ely to Clayhithe Bridge, just outside Cambridge.

Dr Russell will be joined by the Bishop and Archdeacon of Huntingdon, as well as students and staff from University of Cambridge Officer Training Corps, which will also be providing water stops along the route.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Alison Richard, will meet up with the Bishop at Chesterton for the final leg of the walk. All University and College boat clubs will be flying their flags as the procession makes its way along Midsummer Common to the finishing point on Jesus Green.

Following the walk, a reception will take place at the University’s oldest college, Peterhouse, which was founded by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely in 1284.

The party will set out from Ely after a short service at the Cathedral, starting at 9.15am. It is expected to arrive at Jesus Green at approximately 4.30pm.

All are welcome to join the Bishop at any point along the route. Those wishing to take part are asked to contact Mary Rone at: mary.rone@office.ely.anglican.org.
