The new offices of Cambridge-based conservation charity Birdlife International will be opened today, November 4, by Her Imperial Highness Princess Hisako Takamado of Japan and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Professor Alison Richard.

BirdLife International is a federation of people working together for birds and the environment. Over ten million people support the BirdLife Partnership of over 100 national non-governmental conservation organisations and their local groups, making it the largest alliance of its kind in the conservation world. The new Cambridge office offers expanded facilities for BirdLife's fifty or so Cambridge staff, as well as for those visiting from overseas.

Princess Takamado became BirdLife International's Honorary President in 2004. She has a lifelong interest in birds and birdwatching and has worked closely with BirdLife staff in Tokyo and Cambridge to raise awareness and interest in the actions needed to save the one in eight bird species facing extinction around the world.

Princess Takamado was educated at Girton College, Cambridge, where she gained an M.A. Hons in Chinese Studies, Archaeology and Anthropology.
