Bill Gates, Chairman and founder of Microsoft Corporation, has been awarded an honorary Knighthood by Her Majesty the Queen. The honorary KBE is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to enterprise, employment, education and the voluntary sector in the UK.

In 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced the single biggest international educational scholarship programme ever established in the UK. With a gift of US $210 million, the Gates Scholarship Programme creates in perpetuity an international scholarship programme to enable more than 200 outstanding graduate students from outside the UK to study at Cambridge. The total number of Gates Scholars currently in residence is 265: 220 of these are studying for a PhD.
