At a ceremony in the University’s Council Room last week Luis Juste, Director of Santander Universities UK, and Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, signed a renewal of the agreement by which Santander supports various student and research activities in Cambridge.

The agreement, which runs for a further three years from 2011, will include co-funding, with the Cambridge Overseas Trust, of scholarships for Masters degrees at the University.

Students from any non-EU country are eligible, although priority will be given to applicants from members of the network of Santander Universities, which currently includes institutions in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Columbia, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Russia, Singapore, Uruguay and the USA.

Santander will, in addition, continue to fund a Visiting Fellowship at the Judge Business School. This Fellowship has already provided a highly successful course on investment strategy and arbitrage in the inaugural year of the new Cambridge Master of Finance degree.

Santander will continue to provide travel awards to staff and students of the University.

In two new initiatives, Santander will also offer generous financial assistance in the form of student support funds for six Colleges (Clare Hall, Darwin, Hughes Hall, Lucy Cavendish, St Edmund’s and Wolfson) and will support an interdisciplinary project on environmental sustainability - an innovative Living Laboratory project, which will aim to encourage and coordinate student research into the University’s environmental performance – turning the research lens inwards to improve the University’s sustainability.

Professor Borysiewicz, expressed his delight at the renewal and expansion of the agreement, which he described as bringing significant benefits to both students and staff.

Luis Juste agreed that the renewed partnership would provide a wide range of opportunities for students to continue their studies and for staff to carry out research in other countries, ultimately promoting the transfer of knowledge between universities.
