The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, mixed the formal with the informal when he visited Cambridge yesterday.

In the morning, Dr Williams, an alumnus of Christ’s College, delivered the Mere's Commemoration sermon, at St Bene't's Church and later in the day, led a discussion about the Resurrection with an audience at Great St Mary’s.

Mere’s is one of the oldest endowed sermons in the University’s history. It was established following the death in 1558 of John Mere, a Fellow of Corpus Christi and Registrary of the University. The sermon is always delivered on the first day of the Easter full term at St Bene’t’s by a prominent member of the Anglican clergy.

St Bene’t’s was used as Corpus Christi’s chapel for many years and the two still have strong links. Commonly known as Great St Mary's or GSM, St Mary the Great is the University church of the University of Cambridge.
