The new access road that links Cambridge Biomedical Campus and Addenbrooke’s Hospital to Trumpington (Shelfords and M11 direction) will open this afternoon.

Known as Addenbrooke’s Road, it will help to improve access to the Campus and the hospital, and reduce traffic congestion in and around the hospital.

Carin Charlton, associate director of estates and facilities at Addenbrooke’s, said: “We’re delighted that Addenbrooke’s Road will open today. It’s very good news for patients, staff and visitors.

“Other road users will also benefit – the new route will reduce congestion through Trumpington and on the roads around the Campus and hospital.

“It means that another key part of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus is in place – we will continue to develop as an international centre for patient care, biomedical research and healthcare education.”

The road has been constructed by Cambridgeshire County Council and paid for by grants and loans from central Government and from developers – not from the NHS.

In line with planning conditions required by Cambridgeshire County Council, a traffic restriction system will be in place to stop drivers using the Biomedical Campus as a short-cut to get from one side of Cambridge to the other. The restrictions on Addenbrooke’s Road start at the Campus boundary – just before Addenbrooke’s Road connects to Francis Crick Avenue (signs will be in place to show exactly where the restrictions begin).

The traffic restrictions will not penalise anyone who has legitimate business on the Campus.

Addenbrooke's Road was part of the planning agreement with the Council for the development of the CBC. The road will also cater for the Glebe Farm and Clay Farm housing developments planned by the Council along this new road.
