World renowned composer Sir Philip Ledger CBE will conduct a performance at a service this Sunday, November 9, in Christ’s College Chapel at the University of Cambridge.
World renowned composer Sir Philip Ledger CBE will conduct a performance at a service this Sunday, November 9, in Christ’s College Chapel at the University of Cambridge.
He will be conducting his Requiem entitled ‘A Thanksgiving for Life’ on Remembrance Sunday. Professor David Rowland, Director of Music at Christ’s will be the organist and The Reverend Christopher Woods will be the Celebrant at the Liturgy.
Sir Philip was educated at King’s College and when appointed Master of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral became the youngest cathedral organist in the United Kingdom. He then worked as Director of Music at the University of East Anglia and with Benjamin Britten as an Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival, the country’s leading opera and concert festival held in Suffolk.
After leaving the University of East Anglia, Sir Philip returned to Cambridge University as Conductor of its Musical Society in 1973 before being appointed Director of Music at King’s College and a lecturer in Music.
While in the post he directed the Choir of King’s College in the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. He also made a wide range of recordings with the Choir as well as taking them to the USA, Australia and Japan for the first time.
During his career he has conducted numerous world renowned orchestras and worked with a wide range of international artists. Sir Philip also plays the organ and piano as well as the harpsichord.
Sir Philip has received many honours to date, including a CBE in 1985 and a knighthood in 1999 for Services to Music. He has also been awarded Honorary Doctorates form many different Universities around the country.
His Requiem was premièred in November 2007 by the Choir of Christ Church, Christiana Hundred, USA and the Choir of King’s College and will receive its premiere in Australia later this month. Christ’s College Choir will be recording the Requiem together with other works by Sir Philip this winter.
The service will be held on November 9, Remembrance Sunday within Christ’s College Chapel, the service is open to the public and those who wish to attend should be seated by 10.50am.
