The choir of Clare College are joining forces with a New York choir tonight to commemorate the victims of the September 11 tragedy.

Alongside the choir of St Michael’s Episcopal church, they will be presenting a programme of contemporary pieces; including John Rutter’s requiem, conducted by the composer. Other pieces will include ‘Nunc Dimitus’ by Tarik O’Regan and James Whitbourn’s ‘Son of God Mass’. It is taking place in St Michael’s church on West 99th street in New York.

The last movement of John Rutter’s Requiem is called ‘Lux Aeterna’, which means ‘Light Eternal’. Nicholas White, St Michael’s choirmaster and an alumnus of Clare College felt it was an appropriate title for the concert.

Readings in commemoration of 11 September, based on the words and music written for the television broadcast of the Act of Remembrance in Westminster Abbey on November 11 2001 will start the evening off.

Clare College Choir sings choral services three times each week during full term in the College chapel, but in addition gives regular concerts both at home and abroad, as well as contributing to the Choral Evensongs and Sequences broadcast on BBC Radio.

Net proceeds from the concert will be donated to ‘Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund’, a charitable organization for families of victims of the WTC tragedy who worked in the food, beverage, and hospitality professions.

At the University of Cambridge, the flag over the University Offices is being flown at half mast as a mark of respect.
