Cambridge college chefs and front of house staff are celebrating their successes following the results of the University of Cambridge Culinary Competition 2010, which were announced at an awards ceremony held at Christ’s College last week.

This year Emmanuel College took the Stewards’ Cup, awarded to the highest scoring team, from the champions of the last three years, Sidney Sussex College.

Participants in the eight individual food classes were awarded marks by each judge, at the session held at the Guildhall on 4th November, which contributed to a gold, silver or bronze award.

There was also a class for front of house staff who had to create table settings on a Christmas theme.

Prizes for the Live Cookery class held at Cambridge Regional College in October were presented by the Mayor, Councillor Sheila Stuart, at the Guildhall on 4th November.

Emmanuel collected five Firsts (in the Live Competition, Canapés, Cold Starter, Hot Main Course and Afternoon Tea Cakes classes). Firsts were also won by Sidney Sussex College (Hot Vegetarian Main Course), Girton College (Under 21’s), St John’s College (Cold Sweet), Christ’s College (Petits Fours) and Murray Edwards College (Front of House).

There were also prizes for Sam Lawrence, Robinson College for Best Newcomer and for Kevin Doughty, St John’s College for Best in Show.

Judith Sloane, from Conference Cambridge and one of the organisers of this year’s competition said: “Once again we have been delighted by the very high standard of the entries across all the classes. The judges had a tough job to choose the winners and pass on their congratulations to everyone who entered. The live event, where chefs had to produce two courses in just 90 minutes, provided the usual exciting atmosphere.”

Kevin Keohane, Catering Manager at Christ’s College added: “This annual competition is a really important event in the colleges’ calendar as it gives a showcase for the very high standards of food being delivered on a daily basis.”

Judging was carried out by a team of professionals from the catering and hospitality industry led by Peter Griffiths, MBE, Salon Director, Hotelympia.
