The University of Cambridge has announced the appointments of three new Pro-Vice-Chancellors who will take up their roles on 1 January 2010.
 

Dr Jennifer Barnes, the current president of Murray Edwards College, has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor for International Strategy. She has extensive experience in higher education, both in the public and private sectors, setting up international collaborations in the sciences, humanities, technology and the arts.

Dr Barnes has held the posts of Associate Professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, and Assistant Principal and Dean of Trinity College of Music. In 2005, she was appointed as the first Director of International Education for BP, where she advised colleagues in more than 25 countries on how to establish partnerships between business, governments and the university sector to support university programmes.

Professor Lynn Gladden CBE, FRS, FREng has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research. Professor Gladden is the Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering, and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology; she is also a member of the Council of EPSRC.

Professor Gladden leads the activities at the Magnetic Resonance Research Centre, and has a particular interest in applying magnetic resonance imaging techniques in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis and multi-phase transport in porous media. She is also a Fellow of Trinity College.

Professor Ian White has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Affairs. The role will provide leadership for the University in developing the environment in which the whole University community can thrive. The remit includes responsibilities in human resource practices, the development and sustainability of the University estate, including environmental carbon reduction matters, and the University’s critical engagements with the City and region in which we are located.

Professor White has held the post of Van Eck Professor of Engineering since 2001, is currently Chair of the School of Technology and heads the research activities in Photonic Systems in the Electrical Division of the Engineering Department. He is also a Fellow of Jesus College with a long association with the University, having gained both his B.A. and Ph.D from Cambridge.

The three new Pro-Vice-Chancellors will succeed Dr Kate Pretty, International Strategy, Professor Ian Leslie, Research and Professor Andrew Cliff, Human Resources in the New Year when the latter complete their terms of office.

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Alison Richard thanked the outgoing Pro-Vice-Chancellors and welcomed their successors.

"Perhaps the greatest tribute to the outgoing Pro-Vice-Chancellors is the high calibre of those who succeed them. I am very grateful indeed to the former for their outstanding contributions, and to the latter for their willingness to take on these critically important roles."

The role of Pro-Vice-Chancellors is to take forward strategy and policy development and to support the Vice-Chancellor in providing institutional leadership for the University, particularly in their areas of responsibility.  The Pro-Vice-Chancellors work closely with the Heads of Schools and senior professional administrators.
