Students from the city will be helping out at one of the University of Cambridge's most prestigious new building projects today (15 October, 2001), as part of National Construction Week 2001.

Design and Technology students from local Sixth Form Colleges will be shown around the new Centre for Mathematical Sciences on Clarkson Road, to learn about the development of the multi-million pound project, which is now nearing completion. The students will be able to try out many of the hi-tech tools increasingly used today, and see new ways of using technology for design purposes. After the tour, the students will have a chance to speak with professionals involved in the building project and gain an insight into possible career opportunities.

National Construction Week runs from 15 to 21 October. The aim of the event is to promote a positive image of the industry to young people and encourage them to think about joining construction when they leave school. It is estimated that 370,000 people need to be recruited over the next five years to fill the industry's skills gap.

John Woods, Project Manager for Estates Management and Building Service at the University of Cambridge, highlighted the importance of introducing young people to the construction industry.

"The visit to the Centre of Mathematical Sciences is a great opportunity to show them what a rewarding career construction can be," he said. "There is a significant skills shortage in this country and I hope that our event goes some way to encourage youngsters to take their interest further."
